چکیده

We present results and an analysis of a ROSAT/PSPC pointed observation of the galaxy cluster CL0939+472. This very rich and very distant cluster is known to contain an unusually high fraction of blue and E+A galaxies, and a lot of merging of galaxies is going on. The X-ray properties we find are also quite unusual. The luminosity in the ROSAT band (0.1-2.4 keV) is LX = (6:7 0:3) 1044erg/s, rather on the low side for such a rich cluster. We find a temperature of 2.9+1:3 0:8 keV, which is also relatively low, but has also a large uncertainty. The cluster shows indications of substructure, which results in a high value for the core radius and a steep drop off outside the core, if one fits a spherically symmetric -model. The lower limit on the mass inside a radius of 1:0h 1 50 Mpc is 2:6 1014M , and the upper limit on the gas mass fraction is 50%. All the unusual properties of this cluster can be explained if in fact we see the merging of two clusters of roughly equal mass, which is also supported by recent optical observations.

XMM observation of the dynamically young galaxy cluster

We present an XMM observation of the distant galaxy cluster CL 0939+4713. The X-ray image shows pronounced substructure, with two main subclusters which have even some internal structure. This is an indication that the cluster is a dynamically young system. This conclusion is supported by the temperature distribution: a hot region is found between the two main subclusters indicating that they a...

PSPC detection of soft X - ray absorption in GB 1428 + 4217 : The most distant matter yet probed with X - ray spectroscopy

We report on a ROSAT PSPC observation of the highly-luminous z = 4.72 radio-loud quasar GB 1428+4217 obtained between 1998 December 11 and 17, the final days of the ROSAT satellite. The low-energy sensitivity of the PSPC detector was employed to constrain the intrinsic X-ray absorption of the currently most distant X-ray detected object. Here we present the detection of significant soft X-ray a...

X - ray properties of the distant cluster Cl 0016 + 16

We present X-ray data on the distant cluster Cl0016+16 (z=0.5545) from ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations and use them to study the physics of the intracluster medium (ICM) and the dynamical state of the cluster. The surface brightness distribution is not only described by a spherically symmetric model but also by a twodimensional β-model fit. Subtracting an elliptical model cluster as defined by ...

Hubble Space Telescope Near-infrared and Optical Imaging of Faint Radio Sources in the Distant Cluster Cl0939+4713

We present deep Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS near-infrared and WFPC2 optical imaging of a small region in the core of the distant rich cluster Cl 0939+4713 (z = 0.41). We compare the optical and near-infrared morphologies of cluster members and find apparent small-scale optical structures within the galaxies which are absent in the near-infrared. We conclude that strong dust obscuration is a c...

Recent Chandra and Xmm Observations of Two Very Different Galaxy Clusters: Rbs797 and Cl 0939+4713

RBS797 and CL 0939+4713 are two intermediate red-shift clusters (z = 0.35 − 0.41). They have very different morphologies but both show surprisingly interesting structures. RBS797 looks relaxed, with an almost circular morphology; a CHANDRA observation of this cluster has revealed two deep depressions in the X-ray emission near the core. CL 0939+4713 has instead an irregular morphology with evid...
